Flayosc and the Var

The Var region of Provence is an ideal place to base yourself to discover the real South of France!

The Village of Flayosc

Flayosc is a medieval village perched on a low, conical hill 7km west of Draguignan. It is a very active village year-round. Village life centres around the Place de la République and Place Jean Brémond, which are filled with cafés and restaurants. A single main street, known as Bvd Jean Moulin at the top end and Bvd du Général de Gaulle at the lower end, runs through the middle of the village. The main road from Draguignan to Salernes bypasses around Flayosc, so only local traffic passes through.

The centre square features a characteristic local stone fountain where water trickles over a mossy stone. There's another traditional fountain at the Place Cresson at the northern end of the old village, and a third at Place Reinesse, a tranquil square shaded by two giant plane trees on the eastern side of the village.

At the top of the village stands the original "lavoir", where village residents used to wash clothes in water from the stream. The water is channelled around a central stone washing area, covered by a wood-beamed roof.

Just outside the village is a wine co-operative selling wine produced around the village (We recommend the rosé – La Flayoscaise!). Locals turn up with their own flasks and buy their wine by the litre, fresh from the barrel, but you can also purchase in wine-boxes and bottles.

Flayosc boasts a number of excellent restaurants listed in various guides to Provence, together with two small supermarkets, various boulangeries, a fishmonger, the wine co-operative and a full range of other local shops. There is also a bank, with cashpoint, and post office. Most facilities that you will need during your stay can be found within the village. Larger shops and hypermarkets can be found in Draguignan, 7km away.
